The Zivkovic International Summer Academy for Marimba and Percussion (ZISAMP-USA)

The first ZISAMP USA is taking place in Las Vegas in August 2011 and is a six-day Academy (workshop) for marimba and percussion music. The Academy is intended primarily for advanced marimba students, percussion teachers, professional musicians and marimba enthusiasts (passive enrollment only). However, intermediate players are welcome to enroll in the course if they prepare at least two pieces of moderate difficulty (for example, pieces from the "Funny Marimba Series" by Nebojsa Zivkovic are suitable). We will have four full days of practicing, lessons, master classes, lectures, and chamber music coaching.  Special guest artist and coordinator of the ZISAMP-USA 2011 is Dr. Timothy Jones, from UNLV.

There are two options to participate:

As a performing participant (active) or observer (passive participant). The number of active participants is limited to 20 so apply early to ensure active participant status (and a lower tuition rate). Each active participant must prepare two marimba compositions of his choice (If you choose to prepare a large work of 20 minutes or more, such as a concerto, you will need only one piece), or, one marimba composition and one percussion composition. If you are interested in preparing exclusively percussion compositions, you may do so if at least one of them is Zivkovic composition for percussion. Musicians of any level are welcome to apply as passive participants. Each active participant will receive two lessons (open master class format) with Nebojsa Zivkovic on their prepared pieces (individual lesson length is approximately 30-40 minutes). All participants will be involved in fundamental master classes covering grip and technique, but passive participants will not be involved in any performing, or individual lessons.

PUBLIC CONCERTS for participants and faculty:

The Academy will begin and end with concerts open to the public. The opening concert will feature Nebojsa Zivkovic with Timothy Jones and the UNLV Percussion Ensemble. The closing concert will feature selected students from the Academy and will be in a more casual environment in one of the UNLV percussion facilities. Works for percussion ensemble, marimba duo, or any chamber music combination are encouraged if participants come prepared and negotiate logistics in advance (contact Timothy Jones).

The Academy will include:

  • Master Class Lessons on pieces prepared by active participants
(including works for solo percussion, or chamber music, in addition to marimba repertoire)

  • A Clinic by Dr. Timothy Jones (six-mallet technique)

  • Two Lectures by Nebojsa Zivkovic on selected topics (Educational, or Solo-performance issues)
